Antique Oil Portrait of Woman c.1890 | SellSail Antiques

$3,700.00

An evocative oil study of a young woman in three-quarter profile, her gaze
softened and downcast, hands holding a small object she appears to
contemplate. Painted in the romantic style of the late Victorian period
with loose, confident brushwork, deep emerald and umber shadows giving
way to the luminous white drapery of her garment.

The subject is rendered in the manner of academic salon studies of the
1880s and 1890s, when portraiture took on a more intimate, contemplative
quality. The pose and palette suggest a study from life rather than a
commissioned likeness — possibly an artist's model captured during a
quiet moment.

European School, late 19th century. Unsigned.

Set within an original hand-carved giltwood frame of significant
quality, featuring deeply scrolled foliate corners and rosette
ornament. The frame's age-appropriate patina — original water-gilt
showing soft losses to high points revealing the warm red bole beneath
— is undisturbed and entirely authentic.

Dimensions:
· Frame: 56 cm × 44 cm / 22 × 17.3 inches
· Canvas (sight): 32 cm × 22 cm / 12.6 × 8.7 inches
· Depth: 7 cm / 2.75 inches

Condition: Very good. Canvas presents with even surface and no
visible repairs, tears, or significant losses. Varnish slightly
toned with age, contributing to the warm overall tonality. Frame
sound with original gilt patina. No active damage to either canvas
or frame.

Provenance: From a private European collection.
